In 1978, there weren't any organizations in the Newark that could provide the Hispanic youths of Newark the opportunity to develop their abilities and skills in sports. With a commitment to make changes in the community for our youth, a group of people from the Puerto Rican community organized the Roberto Clemente Little League. On October of 1978, the first meeting of the executive committee was held with Luis M Lopez as President and the following people were part of the Executive Board: Ramon Cotto, Edwin Torres, Sara Clemente, Iris Miranda, Enrique Cotto, Nilsa Alicea, and Jesus Alicea.

On April of 1979, then principal, Noah Marshall of Roberto Clemente School threw the first ball. Seven teams participated that year, La Moda, Amigos Unidos, El Barrio Club, Manco Plating, Gino's, Saint Patrick and Aqua Mar lead in the pioneering of what today is a twenty-five team league with four divisions. Many of our unsung heroes have participated to make this league succeed; they are the sponsors, coaches, umpires, parents, volunteers, politicians, agencies, and over a thousand youth, which have contributed priceless time and energy.

With assistance of our sister league, North Ward Center Little League, under the leadership of Joseph N. DiVencenzo, the remodeling and use of out playing facilities are today one of the finest in the Nation as well in the State of New Jersey. All these accomplishments are represented but the name of one person who shared the same dreams and visions we have, Roberto Clemente.
